Cable router/modem

This will be installed by your cable service company and will almost certainly have an Ethernet socket on it. If your PC really doesn’t have an Ethernet socket, you might be able to beg a USB cable modem out of your service provider, but they’d much rather you used an Ethernet card, because it’s much more reliable, cutting down on their support calls. High-speed USB drivers can suffer from stability and performance problems.

Choose an Ethernet cable if you can. You may get a wireless connection option.

Your service provider should have given you documentation about what the lights on your ADSL router/ modem mean, but there should be a light on. If not, check its power cable and supply.

You should test with one Ethernet cable between your PC and the cable router/modem. If your router/modem has wireless connection, we recommend you test your Internet connection with an Ethernet cable if you can, to distinguish Internet service problems from wireless connection problems.
